Early Career and Training
Spinotti gained his initial exposure to film through a camera inherited from an uncle, who worked as a director and cinematographer of newsreels and documentaries. He left high school before graduation to pursue film industry opportunities in Kenya, leveraging his existing aptitude for freehand drawing. His formal credit as a cinematographer arrived in 1972 with the television drama I Nicotera, which preceded collaborations with Liliana Cavani and Lina Wertmüller.

Relocating to the United States in 1986, Spinotti established long-term professional partnerships with directors Brett Ratner and Michael Mann. These relationships defined a significant portion of his later output. He has been involved in discussions regarding the technical preparation of films, specifically the remastering of projects like Heat and the integration of emerging technologies, such as digital cameras and iPhones, into his cinematographic process.
Professional Recognition
The American Society of Cinematographers presented Spinotti with their Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012. Additionally, he received the Golden Camera 300 for lifetime achievement at the Manaki Brothers Film Festival located in North Macedonia. Alongside his technical work, he serves on the board of governors for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, receiving Academy Award nominations for his work on The Insider in 1999 and L.A. Confidential in 1997.
