Three Academy Awards for Best Production Design mark the career of Dante Ferretti, an Italian artisan who transformed the visual language of modern cinema. Born in 1943 in Macerata, he transitioned from formal training at the Liceo Artistico Giulio Cantalamessa and the Academy of Fine Arts of Rome into a multi-hyphenate presence across international film sets.
Collaborative Foundations
Ferretti built his early professional reputation through sustained partnerships with major figures in the industry. He served as a protégé to Federico Fellini, contributing to five of the director's projects. His early work also included a five-film collaboration with Pier Paolo Pasolini. Over time, he formed a deep professional bond with Martin Scorsese, executing the production design for nine of his films.

These wins followed seven previous nominations in the category. His work on Kundun additionally secured him a nomination for Best Costume Design. Among his accolades are three BAFTA Awards, a Saturn Award for Best Production Design, the David di Donatello for Best Production Design, and the Cinearti La chioma di Berenice Prize. The Italian government appointed him a Grand Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic.
Beyond the Cinema Screen
Ferretti’s design work extends into theatre, architecture, and civic projects. In 2008, he designed the set for the opera The Fly, directed by David Cronenberg at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris. His architectural contributions include the decor for Salumeria Rosi Parmacotto in Manhattan and a series of statues for the 2015 Expo in Milan centered on the concept of Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life. He remains active in professional organizations, serving as a member of the Italy-USA Foundation and as a vice-president on the board of the Ischia Global Film & Music Festival as of 2023.
