The operatic career of Claudia Muzio began on 15 January 1910 in Arezzo, where she performed the title role in Massenet's Manon. Born in Pavia in 1889 to a stage manager and a choir singer, she spent her formative years traveling between major international opera houses, eventually establishing herself as a prominent lyric soprano throughout the early 20th century.
Early Development
Claudia Muzio's early environment was deeply embedded in the theater. By age two, she resided in London, receiving schooling there before returning to Italy at age 16. Her formal vocal instruction took place in Turin under Annetta Casaloni, who had previously created the role of Maddalena in Verdi's Rigoletto. She later completed her training in Milan with Elettra Callery-Viviani.

Following her 1910 debut, Muzio reached La Scala in 1913, performing as Desdemona in Otello. She secured appearances at Covent Garden in 1914 and subsequently joined the Metropolitan Opera in 1916. Notable milestones included creating the role of Giorgetta in the 1918 premiere of Puccini's Il trittico. She maintained a long-standing connection with the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, where she performed in 23 different operas between 1919 and 1934.
Recording Legacy
Muzio's vocal legacy is preserved through recordings for Pathé, Edison, and Columbia. While her Pathé discs suffered from technical limitations, her Edison sessions showcased her vocal intensity. In 1934 and 1935, she personally financed a set of 26 recordings for Columbia. These tracks, featuring pieces like the aria from La traviata, illustrate her expressive capabilities despite vocal signs of wear during her final years.
Final Years
Her later life was marked by health struggles and financial setbacks following the 1929 stock market crash. She married Renato Liberati in 1929 and continued performing until her final role in Rome in 1934, as Cecilia in an opera written for her by Licinio Refice. She died from heart failure in a hotel in Rome on 24 May 1936, at age 47, and is buried at Campo Verano.
