Early Career and Training
Born in La Goulette in 1938, Cardinale initially pursued studies at the Experimental Centre of Cinematography in Rome. Her transition into professional acting began after she participated in the short film Anneaux d'or and the feature Goha. Following a contract with Franco Cristaldi, she gained recognition for her role in the 1958 comedy Big Deal on Madonna Street, where she appeared alongside Vittorio Gassman and Marcello Mastroianni.

Throughout the 1960s, Cardinale established herself through diverse performances in Italy and France. Her filmography from this era includes notable works such as Rocco and His Brothers, Girl with a Suitcase, and Federico Fellini's 8½. She expanded her reach into international productions, appearing in the comedy The Pink Panther with David Niven and the Sergio Leone western Once Upon a Time in the West.
Later Work and Advocacy
Cardinale frequently collaborated with director Pasquale Squitieri in films including Blood Brothers and Claretta, the latter earning her a Nastro d'Argento Award. Her later career included roles in Werner Herzog's Fitzcarraldo and the 2010 film Signora Enrica. Beyond film, she served as a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for the Defence of Women's Rights, a role she accepted in 2000.
