Chris Martin

Christopher Anthony John Martin entered the global music landscape in 1997, co-founding the band Coldplay at University College London alongside Jonny Buckland. Since the release of the breakthrough album Parachutes in 2000, his career has spanned international recording success, extensive collaborative songwriting for various artists, and a multifaceted engagement with philanthropic initiatives on a global scale.

Formative Years and Education

Born in 1977 in Exeter, England, Martin is the eldest of five children. His early education took place at Hylton and Exeter Cathedral primary schools before he attended Sherborne School. It was at Sherborne that he established early musical connections, including a blues band called the Rockin' Honkies with Phil Harvey. Before pursuing higher education, he worked at Shed Studios, composing musical jingles for theatrical productions at St. George's College in Harare. Martin later enrolled at University College London, where he focused his academic efforts on Greek and Latin, ultimately earning a first-class honours degree.

Formation of Coldplay

During orientation week at University College London in 1996, Martin met Jonny Buckland. The two spent their first year planning the structure of a group and began writing original music in early 1997. After Guy Berryman joined, the trio operated under the name Big Fat Noises. In 1998, they adopted the name Starfish before settling on Coldplay, a title suggested by Tim Crompton. Will Champion joined the lineup shortly thereafter, completing the quartet that would achieve widespread commercial recognition with their debut album, Parachutes.

Collaborative Ventures and Solo Contributions

Outside of his primary band, Martin has contributed as a songwriter and performer for numerous artists, including Embrace, Jamelia, and Nelly Furtado. His interest in diverse genres facilitated collaborations with Jay-Z on the track Beach Chair and Kanye West on Homecoming. In 2015, he began working with the late Swedish producer Avicii, resulting in joint compositions such as Heaven and True Believer. His solo stage presence has been utilized for various tributes, including a performance at the 2017 Brit Awards honoring George Michael and a renditon of Crawling by Linkin Park.

Philanthropic Engagement

Martin has participated in significant charitable projects throughout his career, including appearances for Band Aid 20 and Band Aid 30. In 2012, he performed for the 12/12/12: The Concert for Sandy Relief. By 2015, he assumed the role of creative director for the Global Citizen Festival. His philanthropic efforts extended into 2025, when the charity InFocus named a residential care facility for young people, Martin House, in his honour.
