Joannou established several business interests in Newcastle. He acted as a co-founder and co-owner of the Lovells Lager beer brand. In December 2013, he expanded his local portfolio by becoming one of four business partners to open a bar and entertainment venue located on Parry Street in the West End. Outside of his professional activities, he participated in public advocacy, notably speaking at the 2006 launch of a mental health scholarship established in memory of his cousin, Nathan Trepezanov.
