Thomas DeCarlo Callaway-Burton, known professionally as CeeLo Green, emerged from the Atlanta hip-hop scene to achieve global recognition as a singer, songwriter, and producer. Early Development and Goodie Mob
Born in Atlanta in 1975, Green attended the Riverside Military Academy. He began his professional path as the youngest member of Goodie Mob, an Atlanta-based hip-hop group associated with the Dungeon Family collective. The group established a reputation in the early 1990s, contributing to OutKast’s debut album before releasing their own critical success, Soul Food, in 1995. Green transitioned to a solo career following the release of the group’s 1999 album, World Party. Signed to Arista Records, he released Cee-Lo Green and His Perfect Imperfections in 2002 and Cee-Lo Green... Is the Soul Machine in 2004. While these projects highlighted his interest in soul, funk, and jazz influences, his tenure with the label concluded as a result of commercial performance.
Gnarls Barkley and International Reach
In 2003, Green formed the duo Gnarls Barkley with producer Danger Mouse. Their debut 2006 single, Crazy, achieved widespread success, topping the UK singles chart and reaching the top five of the Billboard Hot 100. The track preceded their album St. Elsewhere. The duo followed this with their second collaborative effort, The Odd Couple, in 2008.
Mainstream Success and Television
Resuming his solo trajectory in 2010, Green released the album The Lady Killer. The single Fuck You became his most notable solo achievement, reaching the top ten in 13 countries and securing a Grammy Award for Best Urban/Alternative Performance. Between 2011 and 2013, he expanded his public profile as a coach on the reality television program The Voice, while also providing the voice for Murray the Mummy in the 2012 feature film Hotel Transylvania.
