Early Education and Background
Born in New York City in 1970, Cecily Brooke von Ziegesar grew up within the Ziegesar family. She attended The Nightingale-Bamford School, commuting daily from Connecticut. Following her secondary education, she enrolled at Colby College. She later spent one year in Budapest working for a local radio station before returning to the United States to study creative writing at the University of Arizona, though she did not complete her studies there.

The Gossip Girl series presents an exaggerated version of the author's own alma mater. Following the success of the initial 2002 novels, the brand expanded significantly. A spin-off series, The It Girl, reached the bestseller list in 2005. In 2007, The CW adapted the source material for television. While viewers criticized the show for deviating from the books, von Ziegesar maintained that the major plot outlines remained true to her vision.
Multimedia Expansion and Later Works
Beyond traditional prose, the series branched into graphic novels in 2009. Yen Press collaborated with South Korean artist Baek Hye-Kyung to produce Gossip Girl: For Your Eyes Only, featuring original stories rather than direct adaptations. Von Ziegesar has continued to publish independent titles, including the 2011 release Psycho Killer, the 2010 novel Cum Laude—later retitled Class—and the 2020 book Cobble Hill. A standalone novel titled Blair is scheduled for publication in the summer of 2027.
