Caspar Bartholin the Younger: The Last Anatomist of a Dynasty

In 1677 a twenty-two-year-old in Copenhagen published two books. One was a monograph on the pipes and flutes of the ancient world. The other, a Latin letter on the ovaries and the history of generation, contained a few sentences describing a pair of small glands beside the vaginal orifice. The flute treatise is forgotten. The glands still carry his name in every gynaecology textbook printed since. Thirteen years later, at thirty-five, Caspar Bartholin the Younger closed his anatomy books and became a judge.

A Family That Owned a Faculty

Few families have held a national medical school the way the Bartholins held Copenhagen's. Between 1585 and 1738, members of this one lineage dominated the medical faculty of the University of Copenhagen almost without interruption.

His grandfather was Caspar Bartholin the Elder (1585–1629), theologian and anatomist. His father was Thomas Bartholin (1616–1680), physician, mathematician and theologian, whose description of the human lymphatic system placed him among the genuinely major anatomists of the seventeenth century. His uncle was Rasmus Bartholin (1625–1698), scientist and physician. To be born a Bartholin in Copenhagen in 1655 was to be born into a professorship that was, in effect, already reserved.

That inheritance is the essential fact about him, and it cuts both ways. It gave him an education and a laboratory that almost nobody else in Europe could have obtained at his age. It also means that his early appointments cannot be read as pure meritocratic verdicts.

A Prodigy on Schedule

He was born in Copenhagen on 10 September 1655 and began his medical studies in 1671, at sixteen. In 1674 he left Denmark to study in the Netherlands, France and Italy — the standard grand tour of the period, and in the 1670s the only way to acquire the newest anatomical and experimental methods, which were being developed faster in Leiden, Paris and the Italian universities than anywhere in Scandinavia.

He returned to a career that moved with almost comic speed. In 1677 he was appointed lecturer in natural philosophy at the University of Copenhagen. In 1678 he took his medical degree — conferred, in a scene that says everything about the family's grip on the institution, by his own father Thomas — and in the same year was made a full professor. He was twenty-three. In 1687–88 he served as rector of the university.

Later, around 1696, the young Jacob Winslow served as his prosector. Winslow would go on to become one of the most influential anatomists of the following century, which places Bartholin in the direct teaching line of the discipline's next generation.

1677: Two Books, One Career

The year 1677 is the pivot. *De tibiis veterum et earum antiquo usu*, printed in Rome by B. Carrara, was a work of classical scholarship on ancient wind instruments — the product of the Italian leg of his travels and evidence of a mind formed by philology as much as by dissection. In the following year, in Amsterdam, J. H. Wetstein printed *De ovariis mulierum et generationis historia epistola anatomica*.

The second book is why anyone still says his name.

The Glands and the Duct

In 1677 Bartholin described the vulvovaginal glands that have carried his name ever since. His account is observational and modest in tone: "elsewhere in the vicinity of the urethral meatus and the vaginal orifice I saw larger openings," he wrote, suited for "carrying off the fluid from the gland." No grand theory, no rhetorical flourish — just an accurate report of an opening, its position, and its evident function.

That modesty is precisely what made it right. The structures are small, easily damaged in dissection, and easily dismissed as artefact. Recognising that a pair of tiny orifices constituted the visible endpoint of a glandular system, rather than an incidental irregularity, was an act of interpretation as much as observation.

In the same year he also identified the major duct of the sublingual gland — Bartholin's duct. Two eponyms in one year, both in glandular drainage anatomy, both still standing three and a half centuries later.

One persistent confusion deserves correction: the discovery of the vulvovaginal glands is sometimes credited to his grandfather, Caspar Bartholin the Elder. It was not his. It was the grandson's, and he was twenty-two when he made it.

Walking Away

Then, in 1690, he left academic medicine altogether. He became a high court judge; sources also record his appointment as Supreme Court Assessor in 1691. In 1719 he became Procurator General — in effect the crown's chief legal officer — and in 1724 Deputy of Finance. In 1729 he received the Order of the Dannebrog, Denmark's principal chivalric honour. Between 1680 and 1704 he inherited, sold and then reacquired the estate of Hagestedgård.

He had done his anatomy by twenty-three and spent the next half-century running Danish law and finance. He died in June 1738, aged eighty-two.

Why Caspar Is Called a Genius

The claim rests on a specific and slightly uncomfortable fact: the whole of his scientific reputation was earned before he was twenty-four, and it has not needed revision since. The quality involved is not theoretical daring — he proposed no system and overturned no orthodoxy. It is something rarer in seventeenth-century anatomy: descriptive exactness under conditions where almost everyone else was over-reading. The era was thick with anatomists announcing organs and vessels that later proved to be preparation damage or wishful reasoning. Bartholin described two small drainage structures with such precision that no subsequent anatomist has had to correct him. Being permanently right about something small is a harder test than being temporarily right about something large.

The honest counter-case is strong. His professorship at twenty-three came through a faculty his family controlled, and his doctorate was conferred by his own father; the institutional scaffolding beneath him was extraordinary. His scientific output was slender — essentially two eponyms from a single year — and he abandoned the field entirely at thirty-five for a lucrative public career. Nothing in the record suggests contemporaries called him a genius; what they called him, eventually, was Procurator General. A fair verdict is that he had a genuinely exceptional anatomical eye, used it briefly and brilliantly, and then chose a different life. Whether that is genius or simply precocious accuracy well placed is a judgement the evidence leaves open.

Legacy

Bartholin's glands and Bartholin's duct remain standard anatomical terms, and Bartholin's cyst and abscess are everyday clinical diagnoses — which means his name is spoken far more often now than at any point during his lifetime, and almost always by people with no idea it belonged to a Danish attorney general who once wrote a book about ancient flutes. He was the last of the Bartholins to hold the family's place in Copenhagen medicine, and the dynasty's 153-year run through the faculty ended with his death in 1738.
