Bradford Philip Delson helped establish the sound of the rock band Linkin Park as a founding member and lead guitarist. Born in 1977 in Agoura Hills, California, he began his musical journey playing the trumpet before transitioning to the guitar at age twelve. He later balanced his creative career with formal academic studies at the University of California, Los Angeles.
Academic and Early Foundations
Delson attended Agoura High School, where he formed early connections with future collaborators. At the University of California, Los Angeles, he studied communication, earning his bachelor's degree in 1999. During this time, he lived with bassist Dave Farrell and secured an internship with Jeff Blue at Zomba Music. Blue provided critical industry guidance, which Delson applied while refining his musical direction.

In 1996, Delson partnered with Mike Shinoda and Rob Bourdon to launch Xero, the precursor to Linkin Park. Following the departure of initial vocalist Mark Wakefield, Delson leveraged his relationship with Jeff Blue to facilitate the audition of Chester Bennington. This addition stabilized the lineup, leading to a record deal with Warner Bros. Records. Delson contributed guitar work to every studio album, including Hybrid Theory and 2024's From Zero.
Production and Business Roles
Beyond performing, Delson became deeply involved in the band’s production and operational management. Alongside Shinoda, he co-produced albums such as The Hunting Party and One More Light. He also helped manage the group's finances and marketing. In 2001, he and Shinoda launched Machine Shop Records to pursue independent projects and foster innovation within the music industry.
Technical Style and Equipment
Delson avoids traditional guitar showmanship, instead aiming to integrate his instrument into the band's electronic and hip-hop influenced textures. He often uses Shure headphones during performances to safeguard his hearing. His gear includes a variety of Paul Reed Smith and Fender models, specifically customized for the band's unique tunings. He frequently employs improvisation, often shaping spontaneous sonic mistakes into final recordings.
