Bracha L. Ettinger

Israeli artist, painter, photographer, theorist and psychoanalyst (born 1948)

Bracha L. Ettinger emerged from a background in clinical psychology to establish herself as an influential figure within contemporary European painting, psychoanalysis, and feminist theory. Based in Paris since 1981, she developed the concept of matrixial space, an original theoretical framework exploring trauma, ethics, and aesthetics through both written discourse and visual art practice.

Early Career and Academic Foundations

Born in Tel Aviv on 23 March 1948, Ettinger was the daughter of Polish Holocaust survivors. She earned an M.A. in clinical psychology from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where she served as a research assistant to Amos Tversky and Danny Kahneman. Between 1975 and 1979, she trained at the London Centre for Psychotherapy and the Philadelphia Association under R. D. Laing. She returned to Israel in 1979 to work at Shalvata Hospital before moving to France in 1981, where she eventually secured a D.E.A. in psychoanalysis from Paris Diderot University in 1987 and a Ph.D. in aesthetics of art from the University of Paris VIII in 1996.

Artistic Development and Theory

Ettinger is recognized for originating the matrixial gaze, a theory that informs her painting, photography, and artist-books. Her visual practice frequently interrogates themes of transgenerational trauma, the Shoah, and historical memory. Her artistic output evolved from ink and wash drawings and mixed media in the 1980s to oil paintings and digitally animated video works. Series such as Autistwork and Eurydice address mythological subjects including Medusa, Demeter, and Persephone, positioning them within an abstract space concerned with light and color.

Exhibitions and Institutional Roles

Her work has been featured in major institutions, including the Centre Pompidou, the Israel Museum, and the Palais des Beaux Arts in Brussels. In 2024, she held a solo exhibition at the Centre Pompidou, following a 2022 show at Castello di Rivoli. Beyond her studio practice, Ettinger holds a professorship at the European Graduate School and has taught at the University of Leeds and the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design. In 2023, she resigned from the Documenta 2027 finding committee following a dispute regarding the administration's stance on the conflict in Israel and Gaza.
