Early Career and Screen Identity
Born on 30 July 1953 in Bagerhat Sadar Upazila, she entered the film industry as a child actor in Zahir Raihan's film Shongshaar, where she was credited as Subarna. She subsequently transitioned to lead roles, adopting the stage name Babita following a suggestion by Afzal Chowdhury during the production of Pitch Dhala Path. Her formal introduction to audiences as a lead actor occurred in 1969.

Her central role as Ananga in Satyajit Ray’s Ashani Sanket, titled Distant Thunder, brought her global visibility. The film explored the 1943 Bengal famine, showcasing her range alongside co-star Soumitra Chatterjee. Beyond this collaboration, she participated in several cross-border joint ventures, including the Canada-India production Durdesh in 1983 and the Pakistan-Bangladesh film Miss Lanka in 1985.
Production and Industry Influence
Expanding her professional scope, she established a production house titled Babita Movies following the success of her sister Shuchanda's film Teen Kannya. Under this banner, she produced multiple projects including Ful Shojja, Agomon, Lady Smuggler, Lottery, and Poka Makorer Ghor Bosoti. She has served as a goodwill ambassador for Distressed Children & Infants International since 2011, supporting humanitarian causes.
Awards and Honors
Her recognition within Bangladesh includes multiple National Film Awards, spanning categories from Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress to Producer. In 2016, she was honored with the lifetime achievement award. The city of Richardson, Texas, declared 5 August as Babita Day in 2023, and in 2026, she received the Ekushe Padak for her contributions to the film industry.
