Bobby Farrell

Roberto Alfonso Farrell began his professional life at age fifteen as a sailor before transitioning into work as a disc jockey in Norway, the Netherlands, and eventually Germany. It was there that producer Frank Farian recruited him to serve as the primary male face of the disco group Boney M., where his performances defined the visual identity of the act during the 1970s.

Early Career and Boney M.

Born in 1949 at San Nicolas on the island of Aruba, Farrell spent his early years in the Netherlands Antilles before moving to Europe to pursue entertainment opportunities. Upon his arrival in Germany, he focused on his role as a DJ until joining Boney M. Although he functioned as the group's central male performer, producer Frank Farian revealed in 1978 that Farrell did not contribute vocals to the band's studio recordings, a fact confirmed by fellow member Liz Mitchell. Farrell's live stage contributions were generally limited to vocal growls during performances. He departed the group in 1981 following professional disagreements with Farian, briefly returning in 1984 until the ensemble's initial split in 1986.

Solo Efforts and Later Reunions

After leaving Boney M. in 1981, Farrell pursued a solo career, during which his own voice was recorded for the track We Kill the World. He attempted to maintain his presence in the music industry through various ventures, including a 1988 reunion with the original female members of Boney M. that resulted in two remix albums and several television appearances. Despite this brief collaboration, he eventually shifted toward touring with his own configuration, billed as Bobby Farrell's Boney M., to perform the group's established hits. His later work included minor media appearances, such as a role in a 2005 music video by Roger Sanchez and a 2010 single titled Bamboo Song.

Personal Life and Final Years

Farrell settled in the Gaasperdam neighbourhood of Amsterdam for many years. In 1981, he married Jasmina Shaban, with whom he had two children, before they separated in 1995. His career as a performer concluded in Saint Petersburg, Russia, where he died in a hotel room on 30 December 2010. His agent, John Seine, noted that Farrell had experienced long-term health issues and had complained of breathing and chest pain following a performance the previous evening. He was found after failing to respond to a morning wake-up call and was later interred at Zorgvlied cemetery in Amsterdam.
