Formative Years and Education
Born on 12 February 1982 at Nkozi Hospital to Jackson Willington Ssentamu and midwife Margaret Nalunkuuma, he was one of 34 children. He attended Kitante Hill Secondary School and Kololo Senior Secondary School before enrolling at Makerere University, where he earned a diploma in music, dance, and drama in 2003. His entry into the entertainment industry occurred in the early 2000s alongside Mugisha Fadhalmul Toto. Adopting the name Bobi Wine, he achieved success with tracks such as Akagoma, Funtula, and Sunda. Beyond commercial hits, he pioneered a style termed edutainment, addressing issues like maternal health, HIV/AIDS, and domestic violence. Leading the Fire Base Crew and later the Ghetto Republic of Uganda, he used his platform to critique governance, earning him the nickname Ghetto President.
Cinematic Pursuits
Wine balanced his political and musical work with a career in film. He appeared in local productions including Yogera, Divizionz, and the lead role in the Twaweza-supported film Situka. His life also became a subject of cinematic study; he starred in his own reality show, The Ghetto President, and featured in the Peabody Award-winning documentary Bobi Wine: The People's President. This documentary, directed by Moses Bwayo and Christopher Sharp, followed his 2021 presidential campaign and received a nomination for Best Documentary Feature at the 2024 Oscars.
Political Transition and Activism
His transition to formal politics followed his vocal criticism of public health failures in 2016. Elected as a Member of Parliament for Kyadondo County East in 2017, he served until 2021. He contested the 2021 presidential election against Yoweri Museveni and has consistently disputed the results. His tenure has been marked by frequent state intervention, including house arrest in December 2021 and ongoing legal challenges. By mid-March 2026, he remained based outside of Uganda after reporting an attempted arrest via military helicopter.
