Benjamin John Whishaw, born in 1980 in Clifton, United Kingdom, has established a versatile career across theatre, television, and film. Since graduating from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 2003, he has gained recognition for his performances, including a British Academy Television Award for Best Actor in 2013 and an Emmy Award in 2019.

Early Performance and Training

Whishaw attended Samuel Whitbread Community College before joining the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, graduating in 2003. His early involvement with the Bancroft Players Youth Theatre and the Big Spirit Youth Theatre provided a foundation in physical theatre. In 1995, he participated in a production of If This Is a Man at the Edinburgh Festival, which received critical attention.

Breakthrough in Theatre and Film

In 2004, Whishaw played the title role in Trevor Nunn's production of Hamlet at the Old Vic, sharing the part with Al Weaver. His early screen credits include My Brother Tom, for which he won an award at the 2002 British Independent Film Awards, and the 2006 film Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, where he portrayed Jean-Baptiste Grenouille.

Television and Ensemble Roles

Whishaw’s television work includes roles in Nathan Barley, Criminal Justice, and The Hour. He portrayed Richard II in a 2012 BBC adaptation, earning a British Academy Television Award. His film career also includes appearances in I'm Not There, Bright Star, Cloud Atlas, The Lobster, The Danish Girl, and Mary Poppins Returns. Since 2014, he has provided the voice for Paddington Bear in multiple projects.

International Recognition and Later Work

Whishaw gained widespread visibility as Q in the James Bond films Skyfall, Spectre, and No Time to Die. In 2018, he played Norman Scott in A Very English Scandal, winning a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, and a Primetime Emmy Award. Subsequent roles include Fargo, This Is Going to Hurt, and the series Black Doves.
