Born in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1982 to ophthalmologists Jane Wang and Neil Silbermann, he attended Theodore Roosevelt High School and graduated from the Des Moines Central Academy in 1999. Before his focus shifted to visual media, he worked within the online advertising division at Google. Following this tenure, he began developing mobile applications for the iPhone. His initial effort, an app titled Tote, failed to gain significant market traction. This period of experimentation preceded his collaboration with Evan Sharp to build a digital pinboard product.
Founding and Scaling Pinterest
The platform, which allows users to organize images, links, and recipes, launched in March 2010. To secure early funding, Silbermann participated in the NYU Stern Business Plan Competition, gaining an introduction to First Mark Capital. This connection provided essential capital for the startup's early operations. Nine years after its inception, the company transitioned to public ownership.
Leadership Transition
In June 2022, the company announced that Bill Ready, a former Google executive, would replace Silbermann as CEO. Silbermann subsequently moved into the role of executive chairman. Beyond his corporate career, he is married to Divya Bhaskaran, a 2004 Psychology graduate of Clark University, and the couple resides in San Francisco, California.
