The AMBX viral advertisement, created with The Viral Factory in 2006, secured a Lion award at the Cannes advertising festival for director Ben Wheatley. This early professional milestone preceded his transition from commercial production and animation into a prolific career as a filmmaker, writer, and editor within the British television and feature film industries.
Early Television and Comedy Work
Born in Billericay in 1972 and educated at Haverstock School, Wheatley began his career in advertising. He moved into television by directing live-action segments for the Channel 4 series Modern Toss in 2006. His television credits include co-creating the BBC Three sketch series The Wrong Door in 2008 and directing series of Ideal and Modern Toss between 2007 and 2009. He also contributed sketches and clips to programmes such as Comedy Shuffle and Time Trumpet.

In 2009, Wheatley directed the feature film Down Terrace, completing production in eight days. The film earned the Next Wave prize at Fantastic Fest and Best UK Feature at Raindance. He followed this with Kill List in 2010 for Warp X, which received critical recognition for its blend of slow-burn crime thriller elements and visceral horror. His subsequent work, the black comedy Sightseers, premiered in the Directors' Fortnight section at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival.
Genre Expansion and Global Projects
Wheatley continued to explore distinct narrative styles, directing the historical folk-horror A Field in England and the J. G. Ballard adaptation High-Rise in 2015. His filmography includes the ensemble action piece Free Fire and the 2020 Netflix adaptation of Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca. He also directed the horror film In the Earth, released in 2021. Throughout his career, he has served as an executive producer on projects including The Duke of Burgundy, The Greasy Strangler, and In Fabric.
Production Hurdles
The director has navigated the complexities of international studio production. In 2019, he was announced as the director for a Tomb Raider sequel, but the project faced indefinite delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic and was ultimately scrapped in 2021. He remains active in the industry, having moved into the science-fiction horror genre with his involvement in the adaptation of Steve Alten's The Trench, titled The Meg 2.
