The early phase of her professorial career took place at the University of Stuttgart, where she served from 2001 until 2010. Following this decade of service, she transitioned back to the Technical University of Munich. At this institution, she holds the chair of numerical mathematics, overseeing research into the simulation of physical phenomena.

In 2005, she received the International Giovanni Sacchi Landriani Prize from the Istituto Lombardo Accademia di Scienze e Lettere. This was followed by the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize in 2012.
