Commercial Activities
Born in Elterlein around 1512, Uthmann was the daughter of Heinrich von Elterlein. Following the death of her husband, Christoph Uthmann, she managed his business interests. Competitive pressures and internal business rivalries eventually forced her to shift her professional focus. Although popular accounts credit her with pioneering the local bobbin lace cottage industry, verifiable historical evidence confirms she served as a major manufacturer of braided goods.

The town of Annaberg-Buchholz has maintained a focus on Uthmann's legacy through various monuments. In 1885, sculptor Eduard Robert Henze produced a bronze figure to honor her role in the Ore Mountains' secondary industrial expansion following the silver mining boom. During the Second World War, specifically on 30 July 1942, the statue was destroyed for armament production. A replica was later cast, funded by ten years of donations, and installed in the market square on 2 October 2002, marking a family reunion for over 60 descendants.
Legacy and Scientific Recognition
Beyond industrial history, Uthmann's name is linked to astronomical records. On 1 February 1998, researchers at the Drebach Observatory discovered a minor planet. In 2003, this body was formally designated 31231 Uthmann. The asteroid maintains an orbit positioned between Mars and Jupiter. Uthmann died in Annaberg-Buchholz on 14 January 1575.
