Sukhumi native Badra Gunba assumed the presidency of Abkhazia on 2 April 2025, following a volatile transition in government. His political rise occurred within the framework of the Republic of Abkhazia, moving from administrative roles in the ministry of culture to the highest executive office after the resignation of his predecessor in November 2024.
Formative Years and Early Career
Born on 14 August 1981 in the Abkhaz Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, Gunba completed his initial studies at Sokhumi State University in 1998. He subsequently transitioned into academic roles, serving as an economics teacher at Abkhazian State University. His specialized training took place at the Saratov State Agrarian University, where he earned a degree in accounting and auditing in 2003, followed by a PhD in 2007. Between 2003 and 2006, he gained professional experience working for the city government of Saratov, focusing on financial management and the department of social sphere financing.

Upon his return to public service within his home territory, Gunba entered the cultural sector. He held the position of Deputy Minister of Culture from January 2009 to October 2011. He then served as the Minister of Culture of Abkhazia from January 2011 to January 2014, fulfilling duties as a civil servant during this period. These years established his credentials within the regional government apparatus.
Ascension to the Presidency
In 2020, Gunba became the running mate for Aslan Bzhania, successfully participating in the presidential election as an Independent candidate. On 23 March 2020, he took office as the seventh vice president. Following widespread protests that led to the resignation of Aslan Bzhania on 19 November 2024, Gunba served as acting president. He subsequently contested the presidential election in March 2025, defeating Adgur Ardzinba. His official inauguration as the sixth president of Abkhazia occurred on 2 April 2025. One of his first significant acts in office was the appointment of Vladimir Delba as prime minister on 3 March 2025.
