The presidency of Bachir Gemayel ended twenty-two days before it officially began, following his assassination in a bomb explosion on September 14, 1982. Elected to lead Lebanon during the volatility of the Lebanese Civil War, his short tenure remains a flashpoint in national history, defining his role as a commander, lawyer, and polarizing political figure.
Early Development and Legal Career
Born in 1947 in the Ashrafieh neighborhood of Beirut, Gemayel was the youngest child in a family central to the Kataeb Party. His educational background included the Collège Notre-Dame de Jamhour and Saint Joseph University of Beirut. By 1971, he had earned a degree in law, subsequently qualifying for the bar and opening an office on Hamra Street. He supplemented his domestic education with studies at The Center for American and International Law in Texas during 1971.

Gemayel’s ascent to military command began in the Kataeb Party youth section, eventually leading to his involvement with the Kataeb Regulatory Forces. He founded the Lebanese Forces, effectively consolidating disparate Christian militias under his authority. During the Lebanese Civil War, he engaged in combat against the Palestine Liberation Organization and the Syrian Army. His command structure emerged from the BG Squad, a specialized unit that operated with significant autonomy during the conflict.
Political Presidency and Assassination
In August 1982, Gemayel was elected President of Lebanon, aiming to steer the state amid deep sectarian divisions and foreign intervention. His political ideology was characterized by a staunch refusal to accept Syrian influence, which he viewed as a threat to national sovereignty. Before he could assume the duties of the presidency, he was killed in an explosion at the Kataeb headquarters in Ashrafieh. Habib Shartouni, a member of the Syrian Social Nationalist Party, was identified as the perpetrator. Following his death, his brother Amine Gemayel succeeded him as president.
