Graduating from the Gori Seminary in 1904, Azad bey Amirov bridged the gap between academic pedagogy and the nascent field of medical science in Azerbaijan. His early training provided the foundation for a career that encompassed both physiological research and clinical practice, establishing him as one of the first figures to advance the medical discipline within his native region during the early twentieth century.
Early Education and Academic Background
Born in Shusha in 1883, Amirov emerged from a background rooted in the regional intellectual tradition of the Russian Empire. He attended the Shusha Realni School before progressing to the Transcaucasian Teachers Seminary. His subsequent higher education included studies at the Imperial Novorossiysk University in Odessa, where he completed curricula in both the law and medical faculties.

Amirov functioned as both a physician and an educator throughout his professional life. His work in immunology and physiology gained traction as laboratory-based diagnostics and public health initiatives began to influence mortality rates at a population level. Beginning in 1926, he formalized his role as a university teacher at the Azerbaijan State University, where he contributed to the instruction of future physicians and scientists.
Cultural Engagements
Beyond his clinical and scientific output, Amirov maintained ties to the artistic circles of Azerbaijan. He shared a childhood association with the composer Uzeyir Hajibeyov, dating back to their shared time at the Gori Seminary. In 1912, Amirov participated in the theatrical production of the comedy Not That One, Then That One in Shusha, where he performed the role of Meshadi Ibad. He remained a correspondent of Hajibeyov, notably documenting his observations on the historical significance of the opera Leyli and Majnun in a 1918 letter.
