Azim Premji

Returning to India from Stanford University in 1966 at the age of 21, Azim Premji assumed control of Western Indian Vegetable Products Ltd following the death of his father. What began as a manufacturer of cooking oil and laundry soap under his leadership evolved into a diversified conglomerate and eventually a major force in the global technology sector.

From Consumer Goods to Technology

The company, originally founded in 1945 by Muhammed Hashim Premji in Amalner, Maharashtra, initially produced Sunflower Vanaspati and laundry soap. Under Azim Premji’s guidance, the firm expanded into various consumer categories including bakery fats, toiletries, lighting products, and hydraulic cylinders. Following the departure of IBM from India during the 1980s, the company rebranded as Wipro and transitioned into the high-technology sector by manufacturing minicomputers in collaboration with the Sentinel Computer Corporation. This strategic pivot eventually steered the organization toward a primary focus on software services.

Philanthropic Commitments

In 2001, he established the Azim Premji Foundation to improve public schooling in disadvantaged regions of India. His commitment to philanthropy expanded significantly in 2013 when he became the first Indian to sign the Giving Pledge, an initiative encouraged by Warren Buffett and Bill Gates. He has consistently transferred large equity stakes in Wipro to his foundation, with endowments reaching $21 billion by March 2019. Beyond education, his foundation contributed ₹1,125 crore for COVID-19 relief in 2020 and an additional ₹1,000 crore in 2021 to support vaccination programs.

Professional Recognition and Legal Matters

Premji has received numerous civilian and academic honors throughout his career, including the Padma Bhushan in 2005 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2011 from the Government of India. In 2018, the French government conferred upon him the title of Knight of the Legion of Honour. His career also saw legal challenges; beginning in 2020, he faced lawsuits from an NGO named India Awake for Transparency regarding asset transfers. The Karnataka High Court dismissed these cases as frivolous, and the Supreme Court closed the matter in 2022 after receiving an unconditional apology from the primary complainant.
