Ayumi Hamasaki, born in Fukuoka in 1978, emerged as a dominant force in Japanese music following her 1998 debut with the single Poker Face. Early Career and Training
Hamasaki began modeling at age seven to assist her family. After moving to Tokyo alone at fourteen, she signed with the SOS talent agency and released a rap EP, Nothing from Nothing, in 1995. Following an introduction to Max Matsuura at the Velfarre nightclub, she began voice training, which included a three-month period of study in New York. During this time, she began developing her skills as a lyricist.

Her debut album, A Song for XX, topped the Oricon charts for five weeks and sold over a million copies. This success was followed by a string of high-performing releases, including the albums Duty and the compilation A Best. Hamasaki became a central figure for her label, at one point generating more than 40% of its total income. She holds records for the most number-one hits by a female artist in Japan and the most consecutive number-one hits by a solo artist.
Artistic Evolution
Beginning with the album Rainbow, Hamasaki incorporated English into her lyrics and experimented with various genres, including electronic dream-pop and rock. Her 2002 album I Am... featured her own compositions under the pseudonym Crea. This project reflected a thematic shift toward world peace and faith, influenced by the global climate following the September 11 attacks, leading her to adopt a more restrained public image.
