Early Development and Domestic Success
Born in 1964, Sabonis began playing basketball at 13. By 15, he was on the Soviet national junior team. To avoid mandatory military service, he enrolled at the Lithuanian University of Agriculture. In 1981, he debuted for Žalgiris in Kaunas, where he secured three consecutive Soviet Premier League titles and the 1986 FIBA Club World Cup.

Sabonis moved to Fórum Valladolid in 1989. In 1992, he joined Real Madrid, where he won two Spanish League titles and the 1994–95 EuroLeague. During that season, he averaged 21.8 points and 11.2 rebounds per game. He earned recognition as the 1995 FIBA European League Final Four MVP and received the Euroleague MVP award in 2004.
NBA Career in Portland
Despite being selected in the 1985 and 1986 NBA drafts, Soviet authorities restricted his movement. After arriving in Portland at age 30, he averaged 14.5 points per game during his rookie season.
Administrative Role and Recognition
Following his 2005 retirement, Sabonis was inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2010 and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2011. He served as President of the Lithuanian Basketball Federation, holding the office from 2011 to 2013 and returning to the role shortly after resigning that same year.
