Academic Background

Born in 1962 in the West Godavari district of India, Krishna received his foundational education at Stanes Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School and St Joseph's Academy in Dehradun. He pursued higher studies in engineering, earning a Bachelor of Technology from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur in 1985. Subsequently, he moved to the United States, obtaining a Doctor of Philosophy in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 1991.

Path at IBM

Krishna joined the Thomas J. Watson Research Center in 1990, where he remained for nearly two decades. His progression within the company included leadership roles in information management software and systems technology. By 2015, he attained the position of senior vice president. In this capacity, he oversaw both IBM Research and the cloud and cognitive software divisions, positioning him to lead the firm's broader integration of emerging technologies.

Executive Leadership

In January 2020, IBM announced Krishna as the successor to CEO Ginni Rometty. He assumed the role of chief executive officer on April 6, 2020, and added the title of chairman in January 2021. As a member of The Business Council, he joins a cohort of Indian-American executives leading major United States technology companies. During his tenure, he has continued to focus on expanding IBM's footprint in technical sectors while leveraging his background as a researcher who co-authored 15 patents.
