Early Development and Training
Raised in Ruislip and Baghdad, Serkis attended St Benedict's School before enrolling at Lancaster University. Serkis earned his Equity card through work at the Duke's Playhouse in Lancaster, where he spent 18 months in diverse theatrical roles. In the early 1990s, he moved to London, appearing in plays such as Mojo and Hurlyburly. His early television credits included roles in The Darling Buds of May and Pie in the Sky. Film appearances during this period included Topsy-Turvy, portraying choreographer John D'Auban, and a lead role as Bill Sikes in the 1999 television adaptation of Oliver Twist.
Motion Capture and Digital Performance
Serkis gained prominence for his portrayal of Gollum in The Lord of the Rings trilogy between 2001 and 2003, using motion capture to drive CGI animation. This performance initiated significant discourse regarding the recognition of digital acting in awards circuits. He continued this work as the titular character in the 2005 King Kong and as Caesar in the Planet of the Apes reboot series from 2011 to 2017. He also provided the voice and movement for Supreme Leader Snoke in the Star Wars sequel trilogy.
