Born in Matosinhos in 1933, Álvaro Siza Vieira became a central figure in modern architecture through his emphasis on structural balance and simplicity. His professional trajectory began with small-scale residential commissions before expanding into large urban developments and academic instruction, marking a career that spans over seven decades of technical evolution in Portugal and abroad.
Formative Years and Early Projects
Siza graduated from the School of Fine Arts at the University of Porto in 1955. His initial professional experience started prior to graduation with the completion of four houses in Matosinhos in 1954. He established his private practice in Porto that same year. In the 1960s, he garnered attention for the Piscinas de Marés in Leça da Palmeira. This complex, completed in 1966, integrated swimming facilities and a cafe into existing rock formations to preserve coastal views.

The architect maintained a long tenure at the Porto School of Architecture, where he served as a teacher alongside Fernando Távora. His public-sector work gained prominence in 1977 during his involvement with the SAAL housing initiative in Évora. Later, he participated in the 1988 reconstruction effort for the Chiado district in Lisbon following a fire. His designs in Porto include the Boa Nova Tea House, the Faculty of Architecture, and the Serralves Museum.
International Reach and Academic Legacy
Siza has held visiting professorships at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania, Los Andes University in Bogota, and the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne. His international portfolio includes a visitor center at the Alhambra, a building in Huai'An City, an apartment block in Manhattan, and facilities at the Taifong Golf Club in Taiwan. In 2014, he donated a significant portion of his architectural archive to the Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montreal.
