Álvaro Noboa

Ecuadorian businessman and politician (born 1950)

A controlling 49 percent stake in the holding company Fruit Shippers Ltd. was secured by Álvaro Noboa in 2002 after a London judge ruled in his favor following protracted litigation. This legal victory over his siblings cemented his authority over the family business, which his father, Luis Noboa Naranjo, founded in the banana export sector.

Diversification and Corporate Structure

Born in Guayaquil in 1950, Noboa expanded his commercial footprint far beyond the initial banana trade. By 1973, he established Promandato Global S.A., a major real estate firm. His portfolio eventually grew to include over 110 companies under the Noboa Group of Companies, with reach across the United States, Antwerp, Rome, Japan, Argentina, and New Zealand. His business operations encompass banking, insurance, sugar refining, and coffee. In 1988, he founded both the monthly magazine Revista La Verdad and the financial institution Banco del Litoral.

Political Aspirations

Noboa maintained a long-standing involvement in Ecuadorian politics, frequently seeking the presidency. He campaigned unsuccessfully for the office of President of Ecuador in 1998, 2002, 2006, 2009, and 2013. His singular electoral success occurred in 2007, when he was elected as a national assemblyman. His son, Daniel Noboa, later achieved the presidency in 2023, becoming the youngest individual to hold that position in the country's history.

Labor Relations and Public Scrutiny

The business practices of the Noboa Group faced significant criticism from organizations such as Human Rights Watch. In 2002, the company drew attention regarding working conditions on its 3,000-acre Los Álamos plantation, where violent incidents occurred following the firing of unionized employees. Additionally, investigators alleged the use of child labor on plantations linked to the group. Noboa's management defended its operations, asserting that such work was consistent with regional cultural practices and that labor conflicts resulted from the illegal actions of organizers.
