Alisa Freindlich, born in Saint Petersburg in 1934, remains a central figure in Russian theater and cinema. Surviving the 900-day Nazi siege of Leningrad during her childhood, she pursued a professional path through the Ostrovsky Leningrad Theatre Institute, graduating in 1957. Her career spans decades of stage performances, notable television work, and complex roles in Soviet and Russian feature films.
Early Career and Theatrical Roots
After graduating in 1957, Freindlich joined the troupe at the Komissarzhevskaya Theatre in Leningrad. She later moved to the Lensovet Theatre company. Following her departure from Lensovet in 1982, she accepted an invitation from director Georgy Tovstonogov to join the Bolshoi Drama Theater in Saint Petersburg. She established herself there as a leading actress, performing in nine productions as of 2019.

Freindlich gained significant public recognition through her film work. She appeared in Eldar Ryazanov’s 1977 comedy Office Romance and Andrei Tarkovsky’s 1979 film Stalker. She also participated in the long-banned 1975 production Agony. Her television presence included the role of Queen Anne of Austria in the 1978 series D’Artagnan and Three Musketeers, a role she reprised in the 1992 and 1993 sequels. In 2004, after a ten-year hiatus, she starred as an elderly sculptor in the film On Upper Maslovka Street.
Awards and Official Recognition
Her body of work earned numerous honors. She was named People’s Artist of the RSFSR in 1971 and People’s Artist of the USSR in 1981. Government recognition includes the Order of the Red Banner of Labour, the Order of Friendship, and the Order of Honour. She received the Order “For Merit to the Fatherland” in multiple classes, including the 2nd class in 2019. Additionally, she was awarded the Nika Award twice, for Moscow Nights and On Upper Maslovka Street.
