Early Education and Academic Training
Born in 1909 in Tafresh, Afzalipour completed his foundational schooling in Tehran. A government scholarship facilitated his move to France, where he pursued advanced scientific studies. By 1937, he attained a Bachelor of Science degree in general chemistry and a Master of Science degree in agricultural chemistry from the University of Paris.

Upon returning to Iran, Afzalipour transitioned into private enterprise. He established a business focused on electronic products, a venture that proved commercially successful and generated the significant personal wealth he would later allocate toward large-scale philanthropic projects. His business activities defined his professional standing prior to his extensive focus on educational development.
The Foundation of Shahid Bahonar University
Afzalipour conducted a comprehensive study of 11 European universities and numerous Iranian institutions before selecting Kerman as the site for his proposed academic project. On 25 December 1974, approximately 50 hectares were secured for the construction of the facility. The university officially opened on 15 September 1985. The site currently operates as Shahid Bahonar University of Kerman, ranking among the largest universities in Iran.
Legacy and Institutional Recognition
Beyond the primary campus, Afzalipour’s contributions extended to the Kerman University of Medical Sciences. A 350-bed hospital in Kerman and the institution's medical school were named in his honor. He passed away in 1993 at the age of 84. His wife, Fakhereh Saba, an opera singer and lecturer, survived him until her death in 2007.
