Aliko Dangote founded the Dangote Group in 1977 as a small commodity trading firm, eventually growing it into one of the largest conglomerates in Africa. Born in 1957 in Kano, Nigeria, he established a business empire spanning cement manufacturing, sugar refining, and oil processing, while maintaining influence within the Nigerian economy and political landscape.

Foundations and Education

Born into a prominent family of Hausa descent, Dangote attended the Sheikh Ali Kumasi Madrasa and Capital High School in Kano. He completed his secondary education at Government College, Birnin Kudu, in 1978. Following his secondary studies, he attended Al-Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt, graduating with a bachelor's degree in business studies and administration. His early interest in enterprise began during childhood, where he sold sugar sweets to classmates.

Expansion and Industry

Using a $3,000 loan from an uncle, Dangote launched his business career by importing food products. In 1981, he founded Dangote Nigeria Limited and Blue Star Services to import bulk materials like rice, steel, and aluminum. During the period known as the Nigerian Cement Armada, he obtained an import license for cement, simultaneously establishing a cargo transportation business to manage logistics. He later founded Dangote Cement, eventually constructing the Obajana cement plant in Kogi State, which became the largest facility of its kind in Sub-Saharan Africa. The group also operates the largest oil refinery on the continent, commissioned in 2023.

Political and Public Engagement

Beyond his industrial pursuits, Dangote has served as a public figure in the Nigerian economic sector. In 2011, President Goodluck Jonathan appointed him to the national economic management team. He later acted as an adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari during the 2019 election campaign. His philanthropic efforts have included contributions to the 2014 Ebola response and 2020 COVID-19 pandemic relief in Nigeria. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
