During the 2017–18 Eredivisie season, Alireza Jahanbakhsh recorded 21 league goals, becoming the first Asian player to secure the top scorer title in a major European league. Born in Jirandeh in 1993, the Iranian professional footballer spent his formative years in Qazvin before launching a career that spanned top-tier clubs in the Netherlands and beyond.
Early Career in Iran
Jahanbakhsh developed his skills in the youth systems of Rasht and Qazvin. In 2008, he joined the youth academy of Damash Tehran. He progressed to the senior level in 2011, appearing for Damash Gilan in the Iran Pro League. He scored his first league goal on 15 January 2012 against Fajr. Over 42 appearances for the club, he netted 10 goals.

In July 2013, Jahanbakhsh signed a three-year contract with NEC Nijmegen. His impact was immediate, helping the side reach the Eredivisie play-offs. By the 2014–15 season, he was named the league's best player, contributing twelve goals and eighteen assists. He subsequently joined AZ Alkmaar in 2015, where his offensive output reached new heights, including a hat trick against Vitesse in April 2018.
International Competition
Jahanbakhsh represented Iran across multiple youth and senior platforms. His international experience includes participation in the AFC Asian Cup during 2015, 2019, and 2023. On the world stage, he was a member of the Iran squad for the FIFA World Cup tournaments held in 2014, 2018, 2022, and 2026.
Transition to England
In July 2018, Jahanbakhsh finalized a transfer to Brighton & Hove Albion on a five-year deal for an undisclosed club record fee. While his initial season was hampered by injuries and limited impact, he broke through in December 2019, scoring his first goal for the club during a start against Bournemouth.
