Academic Career and Training
Born in 1866 in Oslo, then known as Christiania, Guldberg received his education at the University of Oslo. He earned his Ph.D. in 1892, the same year he secured a position as a privatdocent at the institution. His tenure at the University of Oslo continued for decades, eventually leading to a professorship in 1913. Beyond his university duties, he served as an instructor at the Norwegian Military Academy and the Norwegian Military College.

Guldberg held several influential roles within the Norwegian scientific community. He became a member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters in 1897. His professional expertise extended into the private sector, where he served on the board of the life insurance company Norske Liv starting in 1902. Furthermore, he acted as board chair for the Norwegian Actuarial Association from 1913 to 1919 and chaired the Norwegian Mathematical Association between 1925 and 1929.
International Recognition
Throughout his career, Guldberg maintained an active presence in the international mathematical community. He was invited as a speaker at major gatherings in Heidelberg in 1904, Strasbourg in 1920, Bologna in 1928, and Zürich in 1932. His proficiency in French, German, and Norwegian facilitated his collaborations and enabled him to engage with the broader mathematical discourse of his era until his death in 1936 in Vestre Aker.
