Alexis Tsipras ascended to the office of Prime Minister of Greece in 2015, following a career that spanned from student activism to the leadership of Syriza. His tenure coincided with the height of the Greek government-debt crisis, defining a decade of domestic political realignment and complex negotiations with international creditors during the administration of multiple cabinet configurations.
Academic Background and Early Activism
Born in Athens in 1974, Tsipras engaged in political protest during his youth, participating in school occupations against proposed education reforms in the early 1990s. He attended the National Technical University of Athens, where he completed a degree in civil engineering in 2000. He later pursued post-graduate studies in urban and regional planning. During his university years, he served as a representative on the University Senate and participated in the National Students Union of Greece.

After mounting an unsuccessful campaign for Mayor of Athens in 2006, he assumed the leadership of Syriza in 2008, a position he retained until 2023. Tenure as Prime Minister
In January 2015, Tsipras led Syriza to a parliamentary victory, securing 149 of 300 seats and forming a government with the Independent Greeks. Following his resignation in August 2015, he won a subsequent election in September, leading to a second term. His administration navigated the Greek government-debt crisis and the European migrant crisis. Notable policy events during this period included the 2015 bailout referendum and the signing of the Prespa agreement.
Transition and New Ventures
Following electoral defeats in 2023, Tsipras resigned as the leader of Syriza in June of that year. He later vacated his seat in the Hellenic Parliament in October 2025 to pursue the establishment of a new political entity. In May 2026, he founded the Greek Left Alliance.
