Alfons Schuhbeck

German chef, cookbook author, restaurateur, TV chef and entrepreneur

A single Michelin star awarded in 1983 transformed the Kurhausstüberl from a local village inn into a primary destination for the elite of Munich and Salzburg. This recognition marked Alfons Schuhbeck as only the third chef outside of France to receive such an honor, catalyzing a career that shifted from professional kitchens into media and retail management.

Early Career and Mentorship

Born Alfons Karg in 1949 in Traunstein, he initially trained as a telecommunications technician. His career trajectory shifted while he played in a band in Waging am See, where he met restaurateur Sebastian Schuhbeck. This connection led to a formal apprenticeship in the hospitality sector and an eventual adoption by his mentor, who named him as his heir. He pursued formal studies at the College of Hotel Management in Bad Reichenhall before gaining practical experience across international culinary hubs including Geneva, Paris, London, Munich, and Salzburg. His training included a tenure at the Aubergine restaurant in the Regina-Palast-Hotel, working under Eckart Witzigmann.

Professional Expansion

Upon taking over the Kurhausstüberl in 1980, he implemented high-standard culinary practices that attracted affluent clientele. His work earned him seventeen points and three hoods from the Gault Millau guide, culminating in his selection as Cook of the Year in 1989. In 1990, he diversified his operations by launching a catering service, providing food for high-profile events such as the Ball des Sports, the German music industry's ECHO awards, and celebrations for the Federal Chancellor. He later opened the Südtiroler Stuben in 2003, which secured a second Michelin star later that year, followed by the Five Star Diamond Award in 2005.

Business Interests and Legal Challenges

By the late 1990s, he consolidated his commercial activities under Schuhbecks GmbH, a Munich-based entity encompassing a wine bistro, cookery school, spice shop, ice-cream parlour, and restaurant. In 2001, he formed Schuhbeck Check Inn GmbH to oversee a location in Egelsbach. His media profile grew significantly after 1993, when Bayerischer Rundfunk began airing his television series, and he authored over 20 cookbooks. During the 2020-2021 period, pandemic-related lockdowns severely impacted his revenue, leading him to file for bankruptcy on 18 July 2021. In October 2022, he received a prison sentence of three years and two months due to tax evasion.
