Alexander Schallenberg held the position of Federal Chancellor of Austria on two separate occasions, first in 2021 and again briefly in 2025. Formative Education and Diplomatic Entry
Schallenberg studied law at the University of Vienna and Panthéon-Assas University in Paris between 1989 and 1994. He furthered his expertise at the College of Europe, earning an LL.M. in European law. He joined the Austrian diplomatic service in 1997. His early career included significant work at the permanent representation of Austria to the European Union in Brussels, where he led the legal department from 2000 until 2005.

He served as press spokesman for Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik before becoming the director of strategic foreign policy planning in 2013 under Sebastian Kurz. In 2016, he took charge of the European department within the foreign ministry. Schallenberg was appointed Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs in 2019, maintaining this portfolio across different cabinet configurations, including the Bierlein government and the Second Kurz cabinet.
Tenure as Federal Chancellor
Following the resignation of Sebastian Kurz, Schallenberg assumed the role of Federal Chancellor on 11 October 2021. His brief administration focused on pandemic-era mandates, specifically the introduction of mandatory COVID-19 vaccination. He resigned on 6 December 2021, asserting that the roles of chancellor and party leader should remain unified. In January 2025, he returned to the chancellery as acting head following the resignation of Karl Nehammer.
International Engagements
His foreign policy initiatives included a 2023 decision to suspend aid to Palestinian areas following the outbreak of the Gaza war. Schallenberg frequently utilized his command of German, French, English, and Spanish in his international duties. His professional contributions were formally recognized with the Order of Merit of the Principality of Liechtenstein in 2019 and the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 2020.
