Alexander Hendrik George Rinnooy Kan, born in 1949 in Scheveningen, established a career spanning mathematics, economics, and Dutch national politics. After completing his doctoral studies in the early 1970s, he transitioned from academic research into leadership positions within the private sector, high-level economic advisory councils, and the legislative branch of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
Academic and Research Foundations
Rinnooy Kan graduated with a doctorandus degree from Leiden University in 1972 and a candidate degree in econometrics from the University of Amsterdam in 1972. He served as a mathematician for Spectrum Encyclopedia between 1972 and 1973 before working as a scientific employee at Delft Technical College. In 1976, he earned a PhD in mathematics from the University of Amsterdam under the supervision of Gijsbert de Leve. By 1980, at age 30, he became a full professor in operations research at Erasmus University Rotterdam, later directing the Econometric Institute and serving as rector magnificus from 1986 to 1989.

His work shifted toward corporate leadership in 1991 when he assumed the presidency of the VNO employers federation, continuing in that role through the merger into VNO-NCW until 1996. Following this, he joined the board of directors at ING Group, overseeing operations for the Asian branch for a decade. Beyond his corporate duties, he held positions at the EYE Film Institute Netherlands starting in 2008 and Museum Boerhaave beginning in 2018.
Public Policy and Legislative Service
Between 2006 and 2012, Rinnooy Kan served as the crown-appointed chairman of the Social-Economic Council. He represented the Democrats 66 (D66) party in the Senate of the Netherlands from June 2015 to June 2019. In 2012, he returned to the University of Amsterdam as a distinguished professor of economics and business studies. Throughout his tenure in public life, he received honors including an honorary doctorate from Vrije Universiteit Brussel in 1994 and the Akademiepenning in 2014.
