Ahmed al-Sharaa

President of Syria since 2025

The rapid ascent of Ahmed al-Sharaa culminated in his 2025 appointment as president of Syria, following an eleven-day offensive that dismantled the Ba'athist regime. Rising from the ranks of insurgency to hold the nation's highest office, his administration has since focused on the complex tasks of state consolidation, institutional reconstruction, and navigating a fractured post-conflict landscape.

Early Development and Insurgency

Born in Riyadh in 1982 to a Syrian family, al-Sharaa spent his formative years in Damascus. He traveled to Iraq shortly before the 2003 American invasion, joining al-Qaeda in Iraq to participate in the insurgency. His subsequent imprisonment by American and Iraqi forces lasted from 2005 until 2011, ending just as the Syrian revolution against Bashar al-Assad began to take hold.

Leadership of Jabhat al-Nusra

In 2012, al-Sharaa established Jabhat al-Nusra with support from al-Qaeda central command, positioning the group as a primary force against the Assad government. He solidified a stronghold in the Idlib Governorate while simultaneously engaging in a violent internal conflict with the Islamic State after refusing to merge his organization with their ranks. In 2016, he formally severed ties with al-Qaeda, rebranding the group as Jabhat Fatah al-Sham to distance himself from transnational jihadist affiliations and seek broader legitimacy.

Transition to Governance

The formation of Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham in 2017 led to the creation of the Syrian Salvation Government. This technocratic administration provided public services and collected taxes in Idlib, despite facing significant internal criticism regarding authoritarian practices. Following the fall of Damascus in late 2024, al-Sharaa transitioned from a rebel commander to the de facto leader of the country, eventually assuming the presidency in January 2025 to lead the transitional government.

Consolidating Power

Since 2025, the administration has managed the integration of diverse military factions, including the eventual dissolution of the Syrian Democratic Forces in August 2026. Al-Sharaa has implemented a constitutional declaration emphasizing Islamic jurisprudence as the primary source of legislation while overseeing the nation's first post-Assad parliamentary elections. His government currently manages ongoing security challenges, regional diplomatic relations, and domestic initiatives aimed at economic recovery and the return of refugees.
