Adil Osmanov

A bronze medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris solidified Adil Osmanov’s status as a top-tier athlete in the men’s 73kg judo category. His victory over Italy’s Manuel Lombardo during the bronze medal match resulted in a celebration so intense it reportedly led to a dislocated shoulder, highlighting the physical stakes of his competitive career.

Early Development and Transition

Born in Moscow in 2000 to an Azerbaijani father and a Moldovan mother, Osmanov began his martial arts training in Russia. He initially competed under the Russian Federation before relocating to Chișinău in 2017. While his father originated from Khachmaz and his mother from Drochia, Osmanov settled in Moldova to pursue his international judo career. His father passed away in 2023. Beyond his competitive commitments, he maintains a professional role within the General Inspectorate of Carabinieri.

European Championship Trajectory

Osmanov’s rise through continental competitions began with consistent performances at the U23 level. In 2021, he secured a bronze medal at the European U23 Judo Championships in Budapest. He replicated this result the following year at the 2022 European U23 Championship held in Sarajevo. By 2023, he transitioned into senior-level podium placements, earning a silver medal at the European Open in Warsaw.

Professional Milestones and Grand Prix Success

Under the guidance of coach and former Olympic judoka Valeriu Duminică, Osmanov achieved significant breakthroughs in 2023 and 2024. He earned a bronze medal at the 2023 Grand Prix Upper Austria. His momentum continued in 2024 at the Grand Prix Upper Austria in Linz, where he won the 73kg category after defeating Koen Heg of the Netherlands and Rashid Mammadaliyev of Azerbaijan. Shortly thereafter, he secured his first Grand Slam gold medal at the 2024 Grand Slam of Antalya.

Recognition and Formal Honors

For his contributions to national sports, Osmanov has received the Order of Honour. His career continues to be documented by major sporting bodies, including the International Judo Federation and the European Judo Union.
