Early Education and Professional Beginnings
Born in 1963 in the town of El Wak, Mandera District, Mohammed completed his primary and secondary schooling in Kenya. His early academic success led him to Kangaru High School in Embu before his entry into the University of Nairobi. Following his graduation, he joined PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he received professional training as a chartered accountant in London. His subsequent work involved a three-year posting in Nigeria with Shell, followed by an enrollment at Harvard Business School, where he earned an MBA in 1998.

Upon completing his postgraduate studies, Mohammed joined the Kenyan branch of Barclays Bank as a Finance Director. He advanced through the organizational hierarchy, eventually serving as the Managing Director for Barclays Bank across East and West Africa. During his leadership, the organization achieved recognition at the Banker Awards in 2009.
Public Service
Mohammed entered the political sphere on 25 April 2013, when he was named as a Cabinet Secretary nominee by the Uhuru Kenyatta administration. He was sworn into his role as the Cabinet Secretary for Industrialization on 15 May 2013, a position he held until 2020. Additionally, he served as the Secretary for the East African Community and Northern Corridor Development between 2018 and 2022.
