Abida Parveen recorded her first breakthrough performance in 1973 for Radio Pakistan, interpreting the Sindhi song Tuhinje zulfan jay band kamand widha. Born in 1954 in Larkana, she developed a career defined by the vocal traditions of Sufi music, eventually attaining prominence as a recording artist and composer of classical and semi-classical forms across international stages.
Musical Foundations and Early Development
Born in Ali Goharabad, Larkana, Parveen grew up in a Sufi family. Her primary musical education came from her father, Ustad Ghulam Haider, who operated his own music school. She received further training from Ustad Salamat Ali Khan of the Sham Chaurasia gharana. She began performing at a young age, appearing at the shrines of Sufi saints alongside her father. By the early 1970s, she was regularly performing at Dargahs and Urs events.

Parveen is a multi-instrumentalist proficient in the pump organ, keyboard, and sitar. Her vocal repertoire encompasses ghazals, thumri, khyal, qawwali, raga, and Sufi rock. She is most associated with the kafi genre, a solo performance style accompanied by harmonium and percussion, which utilizes the works of various Sufi poets. She sings in Urdu, Sindhi, Punjabi, Arabic, and Persian, often delivering songs with an impassioned, loud vocal delivery.
International Performance and Cultural Engagement
Global prominence arrived in the 1990s, initiated by a 1993 concert in Buena Park, California. Her touring schedule has included venues such as London’s Royal Albert Hall and the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester. In 2013, she collaborated with composer John Tavener on the composition Mahamatar. She has also participated in reality television, serving as a judge on the show Sur Kshetra and appearing on programmes including Pakistan Idol and STAR Voice of India.
Awards and Recognition
Parveen has received multiple civilian honours from the government of Pakistan. These include the Pride of Performance award, the Sitara-i-Imtiaz in 2005, and the Hilal-i-Imtiaz in 2012. In March 2021, the President of Pakistan bestowed the Nishan-i-Imtiaz upon her. Additionally, in 2017, she was designated a Peace Ambassador by SAARC.
