The publication of L'énergétique et le mécanisme au point de vue des conditions de la connaissance in 1905 established the early academic focus for Abel Rey. As a philosopher and historian of science based in France, he spent his career analyzing the intersections between scientific development, technical history, and the evolution of human thought from antiquity through to the modern era.
Academic Formation and Early Influences
Rey’s intellectual foundation was formed through studies at the Science Faculty of Paris, where he was instructed by Émile Boutroux, Émile Picard, and Paul Tannery. His path also took him through the Lycée Louis-le-Grand. During this formative period, he absorbed the sociological perspectives of Lévy-Brühl and the planist views of Hubert Lagardelle, sharing these intellectual circles with contemporaries such as Marcel Mauss and François Simiand. He completed his doctoral thesis under the supervision of Boutroux, specifically examining concepts of energy within modern physics.

Upon succeeding Gaston Milhaud as professor of the history of philosophy in its relation to science at the University of Paris, Rey pursued an institutional project of bridging the divide between scientific disciplines and the humanities. He founded the Institut d'histoire des sciences et des techniques to foster this interdisciplinary cooperation. His tenure at the University of Paris spanned from 1930 until his death in 1940. Prior to this appointment, his career included roles at the University of Burgundy Europe between 1911 and 1919 and positions at the Faculty of Arts of Paris.
Historical Epistemology and Publications
Rey contributed extensively to historical epistemology, mapping scientific thought from ancient civilizations to the twentieth century. His writing covered the transition of scientific concepts from Oriental science to the foundational developments of Greek thought. Key works include La Science orientale avant les Grecs, published in 1930, followed by La jeunesse de la science grecque in 1933. His later research focused on the peak of Greek scientific technique and mathematics, resulting in volumes such as La maturité de la pensée scientifique en Grèce and L'apogée de la science technique grecque, the latter of which saw a posthumous release in 1946.
