Early Life and Administrative Career
Born in 1939 in Bayan Lepas, Abdullah received his early education at Bukit Mertajam High School and Methodist Boys' School. He later graduated from Universiti Malaya. In 1964, he entered the Malaysian Administrative and Diplomatic Corps, holding various roles within the government until 1978, including serving as a member of the National Operations Council.

Abdullah transitioned to elective politics in 1978, winning the seat for Kepala Batas, which he held until 2013. During the 1980s and 1990s, he held positions including Minister of Education and Minister of Defence. In 1999, he was appointed Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, a role he maintained until 2003.
Premiership and Policy Focus
As Prime Minister from 2003 to 2009, he implemented initiatives centered on institutional reform and the concept of Islam Hadhari. During this period, he served as Chairman of the Malaysian National Council for Islamic Religious Affairs and Minister of Finance 2. His administration navigated significant economic challenges, particularly following the 2008 general election results.
Honours and Final Years
Throughout his career and retirement, Abdullah received numerous distinctions, including the King Faisal International Prize in Service to Islam in 2011 and the Grand Commander of the Order of the Defender of the Realm in 2009. He also held the Order of José Martí and the Family Order of Laila Utama. He died in 2025 at the National Heart Institute of Malaysia and was interred at the Makam Pahlawan.
