The research archive of Abdelmalek Sayad was donated to the Cité nationale de l'histoire de l'immigration in 2006 by his widow, Rebecca Sayad. A sociologist and philosopher born in the Berber region of Kabylie in 1933, his professional career centered on the critical analysis of human migration and the deep social impacts of Algerian colonial history.
Academic Trajectory and Influences
Born in Aghbala within the Beni Djellil commune, Sayad completed his early schooling in Algeria before training as a primary school teacher in Algiers. While working in the Casbah, he pursued further studies at the University of Algiers 1, where he first encountered Pierre Bourdieu. This meeting defined his future research path. Following the 1962 Algerian independence, he relocated to France in 1963 to conduct sociological investigations.

Upon arriving in France, Sayad held various short-term contracts at the Centre de sociologie européenne located at the School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences. His academic status was solidified in 1977 when he secured an appointment as a research director at the Centre national de la recherche scientifique. He remained dedicated to his investigations into French social structures until his death in 1998.

Sayad defined immigration as a total social fact, borrowing from Marcel Mauss to suggest that analyses focusing solely on economic metrics failed to account for the migrant experience. His collaboration with Bourdieu, specifically in the 1964 publication Le Déracinement, examined the collapse of traditional agricultural structures in Algeria. His own subsequent research, compiled posthumously as La double absence, explored the tensions between the identity of the emigrant and the experience of the immigrant.
