Abdelmadjid Tebboune

Abdelmadjid Tebboune graduated from the National School of Administration on 29 July 1969, launching a career that transitioned through various ministerial roles before he assumed the presidency of Algeria in 2019. Throughout his tenure, he has navigated complex domestic political shifts while holding executive authority within the country’s government framework and military leadership structures.

Early Background

Born in 1945 in Mécheria, within the Aïn-Sefra territory, Tebboune is of a family originating from the commune of Boussemghoun in the High Plains of southwest Algeria. His father served as a soldier and a sheikh within the Association of Algerian Muslim Ulema. During his youth, Tebboune attended school under the guidance of the Ulema in Sidi Bel Abbes prior to the start of the Algerian War.

Ministerial Progression

Tebboune entered government service in the early 1990s as Minister-Delegate for Local Government during the final stages of the presidency of Chadli Benjedid. Under the administration of Abdelaziz Bouteflika, he held several key portfolios, including Minister of Communication and Culture from 1999 to 2000, and later served as Minister of Housing and Urban Planning. He returned to the housing ministry in 2012 for a five-year term before his brief appointment as Prime Minister in May 2017.

Presidential Tenure

Following his victory in the 2019 presidential election, Tebboune initiated constitutional reform efforts through a commission of experts tasked with strengthening judicial independence and establishing two-term limits. His presidency has coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic, which saw him temporarily relocate to Germany for medical treatment in late 2020. He secured a second term in 2024 with 84.3% of the recorded votes.

Awards and Recognition

Tebboune has received numerous international and domestic honours for his state service. These include the Supreme Order of the Renaissance, the Order of Friendship, and the Order of Palestine. Additionally, he holds the Knight Grand Cordon with Collar of the Order of Palestine, granted in 2021, and the Knight Grand Cross with Collar of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. He maintains the status of Grand Master of the Algerian National Order of Merit.
