RECORD DE PI

🇮🇳 Rajveer Meena

The record attempt

The date was chosen for its own reasons: 21 March 2015, in the week of Pi Day, at VIT University in Vellore in Tamil Nadu. Meena was blindfolded throughout, which removes the most obvious objection to a recitation record and makes the attempt purely a test of retrieval.

Guinness World Records lists the result under the category "most decimal places of Pi memorised", with 70,000 places to his name. Pi is irrational: its decimal expansion never terminates and never settles into a repeating pattern, so there is no structure to lean on. Each digit has to be stored and produced in order, and a single error ends the attempt.

The student who missed IIT

Meena is from Sawai Madhopur in Rajasthan. The Times of India told his story in February 2016 under a headline that captures the arc better than any summary: he failed to crack the IIT entrance examination, and now helps to shape the country's best minds.

That framing matters in India, where the Joint Entrance Examination is a national filter with a rejection rate that produces hundreds of thousands of disappointed candidates a year. Meena's record was set at the university where he ended up, not at the one he had aimed for, and the achievement travelled further than an IIT admission letter would have.

A second kind of memory feat

Pi is not his only record. He also holds a Limca record for recalling 1,125 random items, a discipline that tests a different skill: not one long sequence rehearsed over years, but a large body of unrelated material committed quickly.

DNA India returned to him in March 2017 in a feature built around pi, and the same month Mic placed him among the small group of people who hold or claim records for memorising the constant. Competitive memorisation attracts sceptics for good reason, and blindfolded, invigilated attempts with an official adjudicator are how the discipline answers them.

Where Rajveer Meena is now

The sources used here run to 2017. They place him at VIT, aged 28 in March 2017, which is the basis for the birth year of about 1989 given on this page; no source used states his date of birth.

What he has done since is not documented in this record. Whether he has attempted a longer recitation, where he works, and whether anyone has formally challenged the 70,000-digit mark are all open questions rather than facts this page will supply.

Why pi records are contested

Memorising pi sits at an awkward junction between sport and spectacle. The official record requires an adjudicated attempt with independent verification, which is slow, expensive and rare. Claims made outside that process circulate widely and cannot be checked, which is why the published numbers and the largest claimed numbers have often differed.

That is precisely why the Vellore attempt carries weight. It was blindfolded, it was witnessed, and it was recognised by the body that keeps the list. In a field crowded with assertions, Meena's 70,000 digits are on the record.
