MATHS A-LEVEL

🇬🇧 Peter Imafidon

Two seven-year-olds and an A-level paper

A-levels are England's university entrance examinations, normally taken at 17 or 18 after two years of specialist study. In August 2008, on the day results were published, reports described Peter and Paula Imafidon as the youngest students ever to pass one, in mathematics, at the age of seven.

The story was carried well beyond the British press. Outlets in the Caribbean and West Africa picked it up within days, and The Guardian of Nigeria later profiled the pair as twin mathematics prodigies, a framing that stuck to them through their childhood.

Secondary school at nine

The next documented step came in early 2010, when the twins were reported heading to secondary school at nine, two or three years ahead of the normal English transfer age of eleven. Minority Perspective covered the move at the time.

That is a smaller-sounding milestone than the A-level, but in some ways a more revealing one. It shows the family working through the ordinary machinery of English state education, securing early admission rather than removing the children from the system.

The Imafidon family

Peter is one of several accelerated siblings. The Bay State Banner, writing from Boston in 2013, described the Imafidons as a Nigerian family considered the best and brightest in Britain, and the Scottish Daily Mail returned to them in 2022 under the heading of a family of prodigies. His older sister Anne-Marie Imafidon became the most publicly known of them, and is the only member of the family with a standalone encyclopaedia entry.

The parents' role has been central to every account: a household organised around early academic work, in a part of east London not otherwise associated with prodigy stories. Waltham Forest is a working-class outer London borough, and the coverage consistently made that point.

What is documented, and what is not

The 'youngest ever' claim rests on press reporting from August 2008 rather than on a published ruling by an examination board or a records body. No source used here cites a certificate number, a grade or an awarding organisation, and English examination boards do not publish age records.

Nor does the material used here follow Peter into adulthood. There is no university, no degree, no employer and no interview with him as an adult among these sources. A child who was seven in 2008 was in his twenties by the time this page was written, and the absence of any later record is simply that: an absence.

Why the record is hard to verify

Claims of the form 'youngest ever to pass X' are unusually difficult to check in England. Examination entries are made through schools and private centres, results belong to the candidate, and no central authority maintains a register ranked by age. What circulates instead is whatever a newspaper printed on results day, repeated thereafter.

That does not make the Imafidon result false. It means the honest description is the one used here: widely reported in 2008 and repeated in profiles of the family since, without an official confirmation of the record in any source available. Readers who want more than that will find, as this page did, that the trail stops at contemporary news reports and later family profiles, and that the twins themselves have said very little publicly as adults.
