🇮🇳 Gayatri Ketharaman

The theme, and the year it was set in

Google India chose “Celebrating Indian Women” as the 2013 theme and put it to schoolchildren across the country. It is a heavier subject than the contest usually sets, and the answers were judged in a year in which the position of women in India was the most argued-over question in the national press.

Ketharaman's response was read by Google as a portrait of multiplicity. The company's own description says the doodle artfully depicts the multi-faceted Indian woman: graceful and elegant, and adept at balancing work and home. That is the description on the record, and it is the one this page reports rather than an interpretation of its own.

The field and the judges

Thousands of entries arrived from more than 100 cities. The final decision rested with two judges of very different kinds: the actor Kirron Kher, and Ajit Ninan, one of the best-known political cartoonists in Indian newspapers.

A cartoonist and a performer judging a national children's drawing contest on the subject of Indian women is not an accidental pairing. Between them they covered how the picture read and how it landed.

Children's Day, and the other winners

The result was announced on 12 November 2013 and the doodle ran on Google's Indian homepage two days later, on 14 November, Children's Day, as the Indian edition of the contest has done each year.

Three group winners were recognised alongside her: Madhuram Vatsal of St Francis's College, Lucknow, in grades one to three; Binita Biswajeeta of D.A.V. Public School, Balasore, Odisha, in grades four to six, for Women Are Future, Empower Them Better; and Akash Shetty of St Aloysius High School, Mangalore, in grades seven to ten, for Indian Women Leading Our Country.

What is documented — and what is not

Google India's own post is firm on her name, her class, her school, her city, the theme, the description of the doodle, the entry scale, the judges, the announcement date and the homepage date. These are the facts stated here.

The post gives no age and no year of birth. It states no scholarship figure, no technology grant and no prize of any kind, which is a significant absence in a contest whose other national editions publish prize amounts. It names no family member. Nothing in the sources gathered here describes what Ketharaman has done since 2013, and no second source is used.

What a national doodle is worth

The value of winning this contest cannot be read off a cheque, because in this case no cheque is documented. It has to be read off the surface. For one holiday, the search page used by a large share of a country of more than a billion people carried a drawing by a tenth-grader from Pune.

That is a quantity of attention no gallery or school exhibition can supply, and it is granted once a year to exactly one child. The doodle came down at the end of the day. The only durable trace of it is the announcement it was made in, which is why a page of this kind has to be careful to claim nothing the announcement does not say.
