The theme, and the year it fell in

Canada marked its 150th anniversary in 2017, and Google built its schools contest around the occasion by asking a single question: what do you see in Canada's future. The prompt invited flags and fireworks. Panem answered with infrastructure.

A Bright Future is a drawing about renewable energy. It treats the anniversary as a question about the next century rather than a celebration of the last one, which is an unusual position for a competition entry to take in a year of national self-congratulation.

Twelve thousand entries, 465,000 votes

More than 12,000 students across Canada entered, and more than 465,000 Canadians voted on the shortlist. Both figures were records for the contest, which was only in its second year. Four finalists reached the last round.

Google's spokesperson Maria Cortelluci summarised why Panem's entry won. “She hit every mark,” she said. “She had the artistry there, her theme was there and the Doodle itself felt Googlely, creative and cool.” It is a plain description of the three things the contest is actually judging: drawing, argument and fit.

The Art Gallery of Ontario, and the money

The awards ceremony was held at the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto on Tuesday 13 June 2017. The winning doodle went up on Google.ca the following day and stayed for twenty-four hours.

Panem received a CA$10,000 university scholarship, and her school received a CA$5,000 technology grant. The finalists, including her, received Chromebooks. The Canadian prize is smaller than the American one, which runs to $30,000 and $50,000, and the difference is worth stating plainly rather than glossing over.

What is documented — and what is not

MobileSyrup's report is firm on her grade, her city, the title of the doodle, its renewable-energy subject, the contest theme, the entry and vote counts, both prize figures, the Chromebook, the ceremony date and venue, the homepage date and duration, and the judge's assessment.

It gives no age and no year of birth. It does not name her school, which makes the CA$5,000 grant impossible to trace. It names no family member and carries no quotation from Panem herself. The research record for this page also notes the spelling Jana Sofia Panem appearing elsewhere. Nothing in the sources gathered here says what she has done since 2017.

A public vote is a different kind of prize

Most children's art competitions are decided by a panel in a room. This one put its shortlist to the country and took 465,000 answers. That changes what winning means: it is not only that professional judges rated the drawing highest, but that a very large number of strangers preferred it to three other finalists.

The scale is worth holding on to. Nearly half a million people, in a country of some tens of millions, made a deliberate choice between four teenagers' drawings. One of them then sat at the top of the national homepage for a day. The scholarship was CA$10,000. The audience was not measurable in dollars at all.
